May the 4th be with you in shaping the world with a new lens

Delving into the depths of design, recognizing it’s just one stroke in the masterpiece of our world’s creation.”

Celebrating AAPI month, I wanted to highlight the ways that heritage and culture can shape one's viewpoint on design. Growing up as an Asian-American and journeying between two lands and two very different cultures on opposite ends of the globe has gifted me with a kaleidoscope of experiences, where functionality dances with pure aesthetic delight. As we explore this topic, the art lies in harmonizing contrasting identities and understanding diverse viewpoints as a result of our backgrounds.

In the world of design, we can always draw inspiration from the rich mosaic of cultural backgrounds that paint the canvas of our world. The key is to not appropriate one's culture, but rather embrace and show homage. Each stroke of creativity is an invitation to a wondrous journey, celebrating the intricate diversity that makes us who we are.

At the heart of how I approach design is a deep understanding of the functionality of a space that balances cultural norms and the day to day needs. This may vary depending on the locale of the project which would require a deeper understanding of the social environment. With a deeper understanding and a different lens to view a space, one can create an environment where laughter echoes through open spaces and daily routines seamlessly integrate into the very essence of the surroundings.

But it's not just function that fuels the imagination; figurative significance and intentionality add layers of enchantment to every design. Like a storyteller, conjuring spaces that speak to the soul, where colors, materials, and whimsical elements come together in a symphony offers a deeper meaning. Whether it's the latest trend or something from the past, one can always bring meaning and aesthetic significance that can be relatable to people's experiences, emotions, and aspirations.

Design is akin to a grand puzzle, where some pieces may not fit initially, requiring slight alterations and contextual understanding. By embracing the magic of diversity and celebrating cultural heritage, we create spaces where dreams take flight, and every heart finds its own place in the storybook of life.
